Take a Hike

The 10th East Coast Trail Tely Hike

A Grand Success in 2010!

The inspirational slogan of the 10th ECT Tely Hike was TAKE A HIKE!, and our supporters and volunteers came out and did more than just a hike.

The hiking and fund raising event was a fantabulous success for The East Coast Trail Association! We broke our own event fund raising records once again. Most money was raised from a successful corporate fundraising campaign effort that brought in $91,400. Another $12,840 was gathered by individuals and teams that came together for the planned hikes and the event-day raffle. The grand total came to $104, 240 which just surpassed our goal of $100,000.

Bad Weather, Great Hikes

The hike was held on Sunday June 6, and the dreary and even eery foggy weather conditions didn't stop the crowds from hitting the newest section East Coast Trail between Torbay Point and Logy Bay for the 10th ECT Tely Hike fund raiser. Over 200 people of all ages gathered at the Justina Centre to be bussed to the hikes' planned start point on Doran's Lane just off Marine Drive. Three grand hikes were planned (2km, 6.5km and 8.5km), so people with varying degrees of hiking experience could take part. In spite of the wet foggy weather most hikers who turned out were ready with rain gear to take on the full 8.5km experience of the new Cobbler Path.

Participants in the Hikes were asked to gather at least $40 in pledges to help leverage money to secure funding for improvements and additions to the trail. It is important to note that the Association is required to raise 10 percent of the total project cost in order to receive government funding.

The 2010 ECT Tely Hike was the first ever to be held in the month of June. It was held at this time to coincide with the Official Opening of Cobbler Path, the weekend of International Trails Day and the beginning of our hiking season.

The Name of the new Path

Brittany Dyer of Logy Bay Middle Cove Outer Cove was congratulated by Mayor John Kennedy (right) for suggesting Cobbler Path as the new name. Randy Murphy and Kate O'Brien (Left) Formally known as Red Cliff Path, Cobbler Path got it's new name from the Town's path naming contest. The pastures near Shooting Cove have traditionally been referred to as, The Cobbler, so that is where the name comes from. The Cobbler Path is one of 22 completed paths (at the time of it's opening) that have been developed by and are maintained and preserved by the East Coast Trail Association, a volunteer driven, registered charity. Cobbler Path stretches along approximately 5 kilometres of coastline between Doran's Lane in Outer Cove and Red Cliff Road. It features the almost endless Torbay Point, the five-finger rock formation in Shooting Cove and the spectacular views of Logy Bay from atop Red Cliff.
